WINNER (age 12), for The Colour of Courage.
I was one of five winners in the Under 18s category. The award was presented in the State Library of Victoria, by Robert Doyle (the then Lord Mayor of Melbourne).
What the judges said: “This story offers a simple, yet meaningful (and often forgotten) message about taking control of our own lives and our own happiness. It is a touching and mature piece of writing which leaves the reader free to choose his or her own meaning at the end. The judges felt it was a highly accomplished piece of narration not often found in younger writers and wondered at this child’s experiences of the world. It left some of the readers quite moved.”
